A Última Carta de Amor – Jojo Moyes (The last letter from your love)

Cada livro que leio da Jojo é uma surpresa. Ainda não consegui estabelecer um padrão nas histórias dela. Embora 2 dos livros que li mesclem 2 histórias, uma acontecendo no passado e uma no futuro os outros 2 lidos só tem uma única história acontecendo, ou seja, ainda estou no 50/50, e como a mulher tem muitos livros (13 de acordo com o wikipedia ) acredito que eu ainda tenha que ler pelo menos mais uns dois pra começar a formar uma opinião concreta sobre o seu estilo.

O que aconteceu comigo neste livro e em pelo menos mais um foi que como a história principal demora a ser explicitada, eu li do começo até o meio num ritmo bem mais lento do que do meio para o final. De qualquer forma, independente do ritmo as histórias dela são gostosas de ler, e pelo menos pra mim, ótimas pra serem lidas antes de dormir (o horário que mais gosto de ler).

A última carta de amor mostra 2 relacionamentos extra-conjugais, um de 1960 entre Jennifer e o jornalista Anthony e um dos anos 2000 entre a jornalista Ellie e o escritor John. As histórias se cruzam pois Ellie acha uma das cartas que Anthony escrevia para Jennifer, e nela ele a convida para fugir com ele para NYC reconstruir a vida. Ellie começa então a investigar a história pois além da conexão com o tipo de relacionamento ela deseja muito saber se Jen e Anthony conseguiram ficar juntos.

De uma forma geral eu gostei muito da história mesmo esta não sendo a minha preferida da Jojo. Achei os temas abordados na história muito importantes e interessantes. Jojo compara muito o estilo de vida da mulher de antigamente com o atual. Jennifer tinha uma auto-estima muito boa mas vivia numa época onde as mulheres eram submissas ao extremo, já Ellie vive em uma época completamente diferente onde as mulheres tem o seu lugar mas lhe falta auto-estima. Ela se submete a um relacionamento destrutivo simplesmente por não se dar o devido valor enquanto Jen o faz apenas pela pressão da sociedade/família.
Há uma outra personagem da história, a secretária de Laurence (o marido de Jen) que é totalmente desprovida de auto-estima, e eu gostei muito do seu desenvolvimento ao longo da história.

A história é cheia de mal entendidos e então você vai achar e desachar em vários momentos. Eu consegui descobrir o final do livro antes de lê-lo por pequenas pistas que a Jojo coloca no texto mas acredito que a maioria que lê não percebe.

Este foi o 1o livro que li para discutir no clube do livro que formei com 2 amigas. Foi uma experiência muito interessante, conversamos a respeito de muitos temas inseridos nesta história, as partes que mais gostamos, as que menos gostamos, o que achamos disso ou daquilo, foi realmente muito legal tanto que já escolhemos o próximo título a ser lido conjuntamente para que façamos nossa 2a reunião. Acho que ainda farei um post a respeito do clube já que isso é algo que sempre quis fazer e só agora deu certo.

Pontos que gostei muito muito deste livro foram:
-A relação de Jennifer com a Sra Cordoza, principalmente quando ela a ajuda a fugir e enfim, acaba se tornando mais amiga dela do que as senhoras que se diziam suas amigas.
-A vingança de Moira Parker dando o dossiê que liberta Jen de Laurence. Eu realmente não esperava isso de Moira. Achei que ela ia sentar chorar e acatar as nova posição na empresa. Adorei! já que eu flerto muito com a ideia de vingança.
-Todo o mal entendido entre Jen e Boot(Anthony). Ela acha que ele morreu em dois momentos da história, e ele acha que ela não o quis também em dois momentos. É interessante pensar que talvez o destino deles realmente não fosse ficar juntos até décadas depois.
-A coragem de Jennifer de largar Laurence e recomeçar. Ela era descrita como não sabendo fazer nada a não ser um dondoca, e enfim, vejo mulheres que até hoje vivem a mercê de maridos e não se separam simplesmente porque não tem essa coragem/força de vontade para recomeçar.

Every book I read from Jojo is a surprise. And I still can’t establish a pattern in her stories. Although two of her books I’ve read mix two stories -one happening in the past and one in the future- the other 2 I’ve read only have a single story happening, that is 50/50, and as this women has many books (13 written according to wikipedia ) I believe I still have to read at least another two to begin to form a concrete opinion about her style.

What happened to me in this book and at least in another one was that as the main story takes to be explained, I’ve read it from the beginning to the middle on a much slower pace than I’ve read it from the middle to the end. Anyway, regardless of speed to read her stories are tasty to read, and at least for me, great to be read before bedtime (the time I like to read the most).

The last letter from your love shows 2 extra-marital relationships, one in 1960 between Jennifer and journalist Anthony and another in the 2000s between journalist Ellie and writer John. The stories crosses each other when Ellie finds one of the letters Anthony wrote to Jennifer, and in it he invites her to flee with him to NYC and rebuild their lives. Ellie then begins to investigate the story because besides the connection to the kind of relationship she wants to know if Jen and Anthony managed to stay together.

Overall I really liked the story even this not being my favorite of Jojo. I found the topics covered in it very important and interesting. Jojo compares women’s lifestyle back to that time with the current time. Jennifer had a very good self-esteem but lived in a time where women were submissive to the extreme, while Ellie lives in a completely different era where women have their place but she lacks of self-esteem. She keeps a destructive relationship simply because she thinks this is what she deserves while Jen kept hers only because of the society / family pressure.
There is another character in the story, Laurence’s secretary (Jen’s husband) that is totally devoid of self-esteem, and I liked a lot her development throughout the story.

The story is full of misunderstandings and then you will think and don’t think various times. I managed to discover the end of the book before reading it due small clues that Jojo places in the text but I believe that most who read it don’t notice these clues.

This was the first book I’ve read to discuss with the book club that I formed with two friends. It was a very interesting experience, we talked about many topics included in this story, the parts we liked, the parts we disliked, what we thought about this or that, it was really cool, so much that we already choose the next title to be read together so we can do our second meeting. I think I still will make a post about the club as this is something I’ve always wanted to do and it finally worked.

Points that I liked very much this book were:
-The Jennifer relationship with Mrs. Cordoza, especially when she helps her to escape and finally ends up becoming her friend, more than the ladies who called themselves her friends.
-The Revenge of Moira Parker giving the file that liberates Jen from Laurence. I really did not expect it from Moira. I thought she would sit and cry and accept her new position in the company. I loved it! since I flirt a lot with the idea of ​​revenge.
-All misunderstanding between Jen and Boot (Anthony). She thinks he died in two moments of the story, and he thinks she didn’t want him in two moments of the story too. It is interesting to think that maybe fate of them was really not getting together until decades later.
-The Jennifer courage to leave Laurence and start all over. She was described as not knowing how to make anything but to be a wife, and finally, I see women who today live at the mercy of husbands and do not ask for a divorce simply because they don’t have the courage / willpower to start all over.
