Journalist Karla Maria has met many interesting people over a 15-year career.

And from this trajectory she released “Mulheres Extraordinárias”(Extraordinary Women), a book in which she gathers a great material of interviews that she did with several women of our country (Brazil), who faced their battle against reality. The book is grouped in chapters super well illustrated by Rebeca Souza Venturini per similarities in their battles.

The stories in the book are very short and told in a journalistic style, sometimes I had the impression that I was reading them in a newspaper or in a magazine where I was reading about some topic covered in one of the chapters. The topics covered in each chapter need to be discussed. Racial prejudice is one of them. Followed by people trafficking, violence against women, abortion, among others.

This book then serves perfectly as a kick-start for a larger debate, since it will only wake you up for each question. It would be interesting for teachers to take their stories to class discussions, as they are short and could introduce debates and reflections on the topic being discussed.

It took me a while to finish reading because I was very impressed with some stories. It took me days to digest some events because when I thought that all of it was real, that it weren´t fiction stories but bad real things that really happen in this world. Juci´s story impressed me the most, since it is really shocking to see how human beings come to traffic their equal and treat them as if they were things.

But I also had good feelings when I read Ivanise´s story in the chapter of the Multipliers of Good. She managed to turn the drama she lived into something that made her go on. Today she helps people who have gone through the same drama she did (missing children).

I think the book is also cool for those who have difficulty with long readings. As it is organized with short stories you can always get one and read through without having to stop in the middle of it. It is very like the structure of a storybook, which, by the way, I also think is cool for people who cannot read very large stories.

I highly recommend the reading but prepare your hearts for so many emotions hidden in the pages of these extraordinary stories.
