Without Merit – Colleen Hoover

Esse livro foi tão massa que tive que mudar meus cronogramas e passá-lo na frente de vários outros que li primeiro. Foi o último livro publicado da Colleen em outubro 2017 (ainda sem tradução para português), e eu comprei meio que de presente de aniversário e marcando um fase de voltar a ler mais livro no original.

Aliás, isso é uma grande dica: se você sabe ler em inglês, leia tudo que puder em inglês. Português é sua língua nativa, ou seja, você sempre saberá, já o inglês por ser uma língua estrangeira, se você não praticar vai esquecendo muita coisa.

Agora vamos falar dessa obra prima. Colleen claramente quis discutir depressão nesta história, e acho que ela conseguiu passar tudo que quis com maestria. Não sei se essa doença faz parte do universo de algum de vocês lendo isso, mas pra quem convive ou conviveu com alguém que tenha depressão, ou mesmo já teve depressão, a história é simplesmente muito tocante e mostra com riqueza de detalhes o comportamento de quem está com esta doença. Ou seja, caso você nunca tenha tido contato com nada deste universo, essa história é perfeita para você descobrir como seria.

Nós conhecemos Merit, uma adolescente de 17 anos que tem uma irmã gêmea (Honor) e um irmão mais velho de 19, Utah. Os 3 vivem com o pai, a madrastra e seu meio irmão de 4 anos, Moby, além de sua mãe, que vive no porão da casa que costumava ser uma igreja antes da família comprá-la.

Merit não se dá muito bem com ninguém da casa, e ao longo da história nós sabemos o que ela pensa de cada membro de sua família. Aí está o primeiro dos grandes temas mostrados nesse livro. Merit se acha a injustiçada da família Voss, porém é a primeira a julgar todos dentro de sua casa.

Ela tem um estranho hobby de colecionar troféus e um certo dia, ela encontra um carinha dentro de um loja na qual está namorando um destes troféus, e acaba beijando ele na praça na frente deste local. O beijo é eletrizante, Merit nunca sentiu nada parecido com ninguém. Porém ele achava que ela era Honor, sua irmã gêmea, e fica surpreso ao ver que ela é outra pessoa.

Atordoada por ter beijado o namorado da irmã, Merit descobre ainda que Sagan, o menino que beijou dias antes está morando em sua casa, e isso vai mexer de vez com sua cabeça. Ela não entende como o pai pode ter deixado o namorado da irmã mudar para sua casa, não entende as atitudes do pai, da madastra, dos irmãos, e aí está mais um dos grandes temas desta história, que é falta de comunicação. Muito se é assumido pelos membros da casa, principalmente por Merit, e grandes mágoas e resssentimentos são criados baseados apenas em suposições.

Em meio a esse cenário e a uma tentativa de suicídio, Merit irá descobrir que ela possuiu todos os sintomas de uma pessoa depressiva, e terá então que lidar com todos os seus fantasmas na busca por um caminho de cura e de redenção para também conseguir resolver sua história com Sagan.

Gostaria de fazer 3 últimas observações: 1- que Without Merit é um título muito genial e estou ansiosa para ver como irão traduzí-lo para português, 2- que quase nada é do jeito que aparenta ser e esse livro nos mostra isso simplesmente com todos os personagens, e 3- cada um encara um mesmo problema de maneiras diferentes, então comunicação é muito importante,sempre, e iremos ver isso sendo enfatizado de uma maneira sensacional nesta história.

Se recomendo? Eu não teria passado essa resenha na frente se não recomendasse muito. Vão! Leiam! Leiam em inglês mesmo se puderem porque este livro merece muito.

This book was so good that I had to change my line and post it in front of several others I read first. It was the last book published by Colleen in October 2017 (still without translation into Portuguese), and I bought it as a birthday gift, and marking a phase of reading more book in the original language.

By the way, this is a great tip: if you can read in English, read everything you can in English. Portuguese is your native language, so you will always know it , on the other hand English is a foreign language, if you do not practice, you will forget a lot.

Now let’s talk about this masterpiece. Colleen clearly wanted to discuss depression in this story, and I think she managed to get through everything she wanted masterly. I don’t know if this disease is part of the universe of any of you reading this, but for those who live or lived with someone who has depression or even had depression, the story is simply very touching and shows in detail the behavior of those who have/had this disease. So, if you have never had contact with anything in this universe, this story is perfect for you to find out what it would be like.

We met Merit, a 17-year-old who has a twin sister (Honor) and a 19-year-old brother, Utah. The three are living with their father, stepmom and their half-brother, 4-year-old Moby, along with their mother, who lives in the basement of the house that used to be a church before the family bought it.

Merit does not get along well with anyone in the house, and throughout the story we know what she thinks of each member of her family. Here is the first of the great themes showed in this book. Merit feels that Voss family judges her, but she is the first to judge everyone inside her house.

She has a strange hobby of collecting trophies and one day she finds a guy inside a shop where she is looking one of these trophies, and ends up kissing him in the square in front of this place. The kiss is electrifying, Merit has never felt anything like that with anyone else. But he thought she was Honor, his twin sister, and is surprised to see that she is not.

Stunned to have kissed her sister’s boyfriend, Merit further learns that Sagan, the boy she kissed days before, is living in her house, and this will mess her head more and more. She does not understand how her father may have let her sister’s boyfriend move to their home, she does not understand the attitudes of her father, the stepmother, the siblings, and that’s one of the great themes of this story, which is a lack of communication. Much is assumed by the household members, especially by Merit, and great sorrows and resentments are created based only on assumptions.

During this scenario and an attempted suicide, Merit will discover that she has all the symptoms of a depressed person, and will then have to deal with all her ghosts in pursuit of a path of healing and redemption in order to be able to solve her story with Sagan.

Before ending, I would like to make three last comments: 1- Without Merit is a very cool title and I am anxious to see how they will translate it into Portuguese, 2- almost nothing is the way it appears to be and this book shows us this with all the characters, and 3- each one faces the same problem in different ways, so communication is very important, always, and we will see this being emphasized in a sensational way in this story.

Would I recommend it? I would not have passed this review up front if I did not recommend this book very much. Go! Read! Read in English if you can because this book is totally worth it.
