Tartarugas até lá embaixo - John Green (Turtles All The Way Down)

This one wasn’t able to take the place of Paper Towns as my favorite since I really relate to the main character of this story, but it was very close to it since, for sure, it is the best written of John Green’s books that I’ve read so far (still need to read Will Grayson).

The story is about Aza, a 17-year-old girl who lives with her mother, who’s a teacher, whose father died of a heart attack a few years earlier, and who has OCD, a disease that literally dictates the pace of her life, her friends and her relationships .

Daisy, her best friend, will convince Aza to get in touch again with Davis, a boy she met at a camp years earlier and who is in the news since his father, a millionaire, disappeared before being arrested for corruption.

Daisy wants a reward that the police is offering to anyone who gives information about the millionaire’s location, and so, she and Aza will investigate this disappearance to try to get that money to use in college maybe.

Although the story happens around this investigation and Aza’s relationship with Davis, I believe the most interesting of all is to see how the mind of a person with OCD reacts to a relationship. We see this both on the side of friendship, when she is with Daisy, and on the family side, relating to her mother and loving, when she is with Davis.

The high point of the book is the way Aza tries to explain in some moments how she really feels when she is caught up in this spiral of thoughts – as she calls an OCD crisis – and yes, this is the reason we have a spiral on the cover of book. The title will be explained in a very interesting part of the book, and it is also related to OCD.

Other than that, I should also note that I loved Daisy being a huge Star Wars fan, and the parts in which she speaks her point of view of living with a friend with Aza’s behavior.

The supporting characters end up being very important because people who orbit around those who have OCD are also affected by this disease in some way.
