Um de nós está mentindo – Karen M. McManus (One of us is lying)

Um livro que por ser YA superou minhas expectativas. Ele foge da centralização da história num casal para usar um assassinato como pano de fundo e assim mostrar a vida de 4 adolescentes, os suspeitos do crime. Eu classificaria ele então como um romance policial adolescente.

5 alunos estão na detenção e um deles morre aparentemente tendo sido assassinado. A polícia começa a investigar os 4 alunos que estavam na detenção como os principais suspeitos, mas esses alunos acham que qualquer pessoa da escola (todas odiavam Simon, pois ele mantinha um site de fofoca onde postava da vida da escola toda) pode ter cometido o crime. Veremos então a investigação desses adolescentes suspeitos paralelamente a investigação policial.

O livro acerta na construção de cada um dos 4 suspeitos, pois todos tem segredos que poderiam incitá-los a querer Simon morto, mas ao mesmo tempo todos tem muitos motivos para não o fazer. O legal é ir conhecendo cada um e vendo que todos são algo muito além dos meros esteriótipos que o ensino médio ou um site de fofoca os rotula.

Se você prestar atenção irá desconfiar do assassino já no meio do livro, mas não acho que tendo acertado desde o meio você irá desanimar na leitura pois o livro te prende justamente por centrar os acontecimentos muito além apenas do assassinato. Você fica apegado aos 4 personagens e tudo que eles estão vivendo em consequência do ocorrido.

Vale muito a pena, eu li em inglês e é um livro super fácil pra quem quiser treinar. Comprem e aproveitem a leitura!

A book that for being YA exceeded my expectations. It escapes from the story centralization in a couple to use a murder as a backdrop and thus show the lives of 4 teenagers, the suspects of the crime. I would then classify it as a teenage detective novel.

Five students are in detention and one of them dies – apparently having been murdered. The Police begins to investigate the 4 students who were in detention as the main suspects, but these students believe that anyone in the school (everyone hated Simon since he kept a gossip site where he posted about the whole school life) may have committed the crime. We will then see the investigation of these suspects in parallel with the police investigation.

The book succeeds in describing the suspects lives, since everyone has secrets that could prompt them to want Simon dead, but at the same time everyone has many reasons to do it too. The cool thing is to get to know each one and see that everyone is something far beyond mere stereotypes that high school or a gossip site labels them.

If you pay attention you will discover who is the killer in the middle of the book, but I do not think this will discourage you in finish reading it because the book holds you by focusing on events far beyond the murder. You get attached to the 4 characters and all that they are living as a result of what happened.

It’s worth it, I read it in English and it’s a super easy book for anyone who wants to train (same if you want to do it with Portuguese). Buy and enjoy reading!
