If you come softly – Jacqueline Woodson

Definitivamente a proposta do John de conhecermos livros muito legais que não são tão famosos é muito boa, pois sem o clube eu nunca teria conhecido If you come softly da Jacqueline Woodson, mesmo porque ela não é uma autora que já foi traduzida para o português, então eu nunca havia me deparado com nada dela em livrarias etc.

O livro foi originalmente lançado em 1998 e conta a história de Miah e Elle. Miah é filho de um casal negro muito bem sucedido, a mãe é escritora de vários best sellers e o pai é diretor de cinema.  Embora sejam separados eles fazem questão de colocar o filho em uma das escolas de maior prestígio do Upper East Side em NYC, e é nessa nova escola que Miah irá conhecer Elle.

Ambos desenvolvem um amor a primeira vista e o namoro é questão de tempo até acontecer. O grande porém é a realidade ao redor do casal, colegas de escola comentando e olhando estranho para os dois, pessoas na rua achando que Miah pode estar se aproveitando de Elle, e por aí vai.  Elle teme o preconceito da família quando descobrirem que seu amor é negro, enquanto Miah começa a pensar sobre o futuro de uma relação inter racial.

O livro é narrado sob o ponto de vista de Elle em primeira pessoa, e há capítulos de Jeremiah, porém embora acompanhemos seus pensamentos e sentimentos eles não narrados em terceira pessoa.

Um história tocante e eu diria um tanto chocante pela questão do preconceito abordada e por um final de grande impacto.

Pensando em primeiro amor ela me fez lembrar muito de Eleanor & Park.

Se você consegue ler em inglês é uma boa recomendação. O nível pra leitura não precisa ser avançado já que a linguagem é bem simples.

Definitely John’s proposal to know cool books that are not so famous is very good, because without the club I would never have known If you come softly from Jacqueline Woodson, mostly due to the fact that she is not an author who has already been translated into Portuguese, so I had never come across anything from her in bookstores.

The book was originally released in 1998 and tells the story of Miah and Elle. Miah is the son of a very successful black couple, the mother is a writer of several best sellers and the father is a film director. Although they are divorced they make sure their son goes to one of the most prestigious schools of the Upper East Side in NYC, and it is in this new school that Miah will meet Elle.

Both develop a love at first sight and dating is a matter of time until it happens. The big thing though is the reality around the couple, schoolmates commenting and looking weird to them, people on the street thinking that Miah might be taking advantage of Elle, and so on. Elle fears the family’s prejudice when they discover that her love is black, while Miah begins to think about the future of an interracial relationship.

The book is narrated from Elle’s point of view, and there are chapters of Jeremiah, but although we follow his thoughts and feelings, they are not narrated in the third person.

A touching story and I would say somewhat shocking when it comes to racial prejudice and an end of great impact.

Thinking about first love the book reminded me a lot of Eleanor & Park.

If you can read in English this is a good recommendation. The level for reading does not have to be advanced since the language is very simple.
