A química que há entre nós – Krystal Sutherland (Our Chemical Hearts)

Um dos melhores YA que li nos últimos tempos. Me fez pensar muito em  Eleanor & Park e também Cidades de Papel. O estilo da Krystal me fez lembrar demais do John Green.

Nele iremos conhecer Henry Page, um nerd (sensacional, perfeito, tudo de bom!) que irá narrar pra gente a história de seu primeiro amor, e desde as primeiras páginas ele já deixa claro que este amor não foi um amor à primeira vista e que sua amada era comum assim como ele.

Ele conhece Grace Town no seu último ano de high school, quando o professor de inglês convida ambos para serem editores do jornal da escola. Grace de cara nega a proposta, e Henry indignado com a atitude dela a segue para confrontá-la. Os dois acabam engatando uma conversa e no dia seguinte Grace muda de ideia e aceita dividir o cargo com Henry.

Então os dois começarão a passar mais tempo juntos, e quanto mais passam tempo juntos mais sentem uma conexão forte nascendo entre eles. Bem, pelo menos é o que Henry acha, mas Grace diferente dele parece sempre querer lutar contra esse sentimento. Ela também tem umas manias bem esquisitas, como por exemplo andar com roupas de menino, que Henry não sabe explicar o porquê. Grace é muito fechada e na verdade quase não compartilha nada de sua vida, mas Henry acaba descobrindo algumas coisas meio que “acidentalmente”.

O charme do livro pra mim fica por conta de toda a narrativa de Henry dessa gangorra emocional que se estabelece na vida dele e em seu relacionamento com Grace. Achei a narrativa tão real. Me senti de volta aos meus anos teens.  Tem também o relacionamento dele com os amigos, que também é bem especial de se ler. E sim, o final também é bem real, então não tem como você também não se identificar com o que você possa já ter vivido na sua vida.

Recomendo a leitura de olhos fechados e estou ansiosa para ver a adaptação que vai estrear no Amazon Prime agora em agosto.

One of the best YA I’ve read these past months. It made me think a lot about Eleanor & Park and also Paper Towns. And Krystal’s style reminded me a not about John Green.

In it, we will meet Henry Page, a nerd (sensational, perfect, the best!) who will tell us the story of his first love, and from the first pages he already makes it clear that this love was not a love at first sight and that his beloved was just as regular as he was.

He meets Grace Town in his high school senior year, when the English teacher invites them both to be editors of the school newspaper. Grace all of a sudden denies the proposal, and Henry outraged by her attitude follows her to confront her. The two end up starting a conversation and the next day Grace changes her mind and agrees to share the position with Henry.

Then the two will begin to spend more time together, and the more time they spend together the more they feel a strong connection being born between them. Well, at least that’s what Henry thinks, but Grace unlike him always seems to want to fight that feeling. She also has some very weird habits, like walking around in boy clothes, which Henry can’t explain why. Grace is very closed and doesn’t really share anything from her life, but Henry ends up discovering some things “accidentally”.

The charm of the book for me is due to the whole narrative of this emotional seesaw that is established in Henry’s life and in his relationship with Grace. I thought the narrative so real. I felt back to my teenage years while reading it. There is also his relationship with friends, which is also very special to read. And yes, the ending is also very real, so there is no way you cannot identify with what you may have already experienced in your life.

I recommend reading with my eyes closed, and I’m looking forward to seeing the adaptation that will debut on Amazon Prime  in August.
