Connell and Marianne live in a small town in Ireland and study at the same school, but Connell plays football and is part of the most popular  in school while Marianne is super nerdy, introverted and  has almost no friend.

At first glance, no one would say that the two could relate, but the fact that Connell’s mother cleans up at Marianne’s family house ends up bringing them together since Connell always goes to her house to pick up his mother.

The two will end up having a secret affair after school which Connell hides from everyone and practically doesn’t talk to Marianne at school.

Connell is attracted to Marianne and his way of looking at life without caring what people think, because he can’t do the same, and it will be precisely this limitation that will end up separating the two before they go to college. .

But the following year they both go to the same college in Dublin, and the roles will be changed. Marianne will be popular and have friends there, and Connell will not be able to fit into the new reality, always remaining in the orbit of Marianne’s friends.

Of course, their affair will be revived during this time in college, but it will also be marked by many ups and downs I would say.

What most caught my attention in the whole story is that one orbits the life of the other even when they are not together as a couple, as it is described to us that their relationship makes them feel that they can be themselves when they are close to each other. I thought it very romantic, although of romantic this book has nothing, seriously people this book is a big drama.

Both Connell’s and Marianne’s lives are full of problems, I would say that Marianne’s life is even worse because she has enormous issues with her family.

I thought it a very interesting story, and for me what was best developed were the characters and their thoughts and attitudes. Now the language with no punctuation disliked me a little (I don’t like this style because I rely a lot on punctuation to keep my reading pace, something very personal) and also the vague ending due to all the complexity of the characters that was presented to us throughout the book. I confess that it seemed to me that the author intended to make a sequel because I really thought there was something missing at the end.

Anyway, I would recommend reading it, because I thought the themes presented very relevant.
