O ALIESNISTA – Machado de Assis

Foi uma releitura para mim, pois havia lido esse conto na época da faculdade. Nesta época eu já tinha achado o conto legal, porém nessa releitura devo destacar que acabei gostando bem mais por entender ainda mais as ironias e críticas do Machado ao longo da história.

Aliás, isso é um ponto a ser ressaltado. Eu não acho que pessoas muito novinhas consigam entender toda a genialidade do texto do Machado, simplesmente pq elas não viveram o suficiente para apreciar isso. Eu não havia entendido um baita número de críticas que este texto pequeno do Alienista continha de volta lá na época da faculdade, e hoje quando analiso percebo que era porque eu não havia passado por muitas situações que iriam me ajudar a entender melhor essas nuances do texto.

O texto é muito bem escrito e claro que qualquer pessoa com o mínimo de conhecimento e atenção irá entender o que acontece na história literalmente. Mas as nuances, ah as nuances ficam por conta dos anos de vida que o leitor que está experienciando a história tem (Essa é minha opinião para todos os livros do Machado que já li até esse presente post)

Alienista para quem não sabe é um especialista em estudar doenças psicológicas. E o nosso alienista, personagem principal da história chama-se Simão Bacamarte.

Simão muda-se para uma cidadezinha chamada Itaguaí, e lá após negociar com a Câmara consegue abrir um manicônimo sustentado em parte pela prefeitura e em parte pelos familiares dos pacientes.

Ele nos é apresentado como uma pessoa extremamente ligada a ciência. E a ligação é tão exagerada que até mesmo a mulher que escolhe para casar o faz baseando-se na melhor pessoa para ter filhos e não baseado em sentimentos.

Fato é que Simão começará a prender muita gente nesse manicônimo e os motivos que justificam tais prisões são os mais diversos e duvidosos possíveis. (Ele chega até a prender a própria mulher lá pelo motivo mais esdrúxulo)

Isto irá chamar a atenção de certas pessoas da cidade, e algumas delas irão digamos que capitalizar em cima da situação.

E assim iremos caminhando para o conflito final e a resolução do conto. (Que conto aqui em off para quem curte um spoiler termina com o próprio Simão indo se internar no manicômio)

It was a re-reading for me, because I had read this story when I was in college. At that time I already thought it was a good story, but in this re-reading I must point out that I liked it even more because I understood more of the Machado’s ironies and criticisms throughout the story.

By the way, this is a point to be emphasized. I don’t think that very young people can understand all the geniality of Machado’s text, simply because they haven’t lived long enough to appreciate it. I didn’t understand a lot of the criticisms that this small text contained back when I was in college, and today when I analyze it I see that it was because I hadn’t been through many situations that would help me better understand these nuances of the text.

The text is very well written and of course anyone with a minimum of knowledge and attention will understand what happens in the story literally. But the nuances, ah, the nuances are understood according to the years of life that the reader who is experiencing the story is (this is my opinion for all Machado’s books that I have read until this present post)

Alienist for those who don’t know is a specialist in studying psychological diseases. And our alienist, the main character of the story is called Simão Bacamarte.

Simão moves to a small town called Itaguaí, and there after negotiating with the town council he manages to open a mental institution supported in part by the city council and in part by the patients’ families.

He is presented to us as a person extremely connected to science. And the connection is so exaggerated that even the woman he chooses to marry he does so based on the best person to have children and not based on feelings.

The fact is that Simon will start arresting many people in this mental institution, and the reasons justifying such arrests are the most diverse and dubious possible. (He even arrests his own wife there for the most bizarre reason).

This will draw the attention of certain people in town, and some of them will, let’s say, capitalize on the situation.

And this is how we will go towards the final conflict and the resolution of the story (which, for those who like spoilers, ends with Simon himself going to the mental institution).
