Amor Amargo – Jennifer Brown (Bitter End)

Assim como em A lista Negra, Jennifer trata neste livro de um assunto muito polêmico e que deveria ser mais discutido em nossa sociedade: a violência contra a mulher.

Alex tem uma vida bem normal apesar de ter perdido a mãe quando era criança. Ela mora com o pai e uma das duas irmãs (Célia e Shannin), trabalha numa lanchonete depois da escola, e tem dois melhores amigos, (Bethany e Zach) com os quais está planejando uma viagem logo após se formarem no colégio. Ela quer muito conhecer o estado e o último lugar que sua mãe esteve antes de morrer num acidente.

Tudo está aparentemente bem na vida dela e com ela, mas os fantasmas que ela alimenta internamente irão vir à tona quando ela conhece Cole. Cole é o tipo de cara que à primeira vista é o namorado perfeito, porém quanto mais Alex o conhece, mais vê que se meteu em um grande problema e que não sabe mais como sair dele.

Para mim o mais impactante da história foi ver toda a descrição psicológica de tudo que Alex está vivendo/sentindo aos olhos dela mesma. É algo tão interessante que por vezes consegui me colocar em seu lugar. Ela sempre achou que merecia menos, que era menos, e quando está em uma situação prejudicial a ela própria não consegue tomar uma atitude frente a isso justamente por no fundo achar que merece aquilo. Quem nunca sofreu com um pouco de falta de auto estima que atire a primeira pedra.

Achei a conclusão deste livro muito similar à do livro A Lista Negra, e não sei se isso é um estilo da Jennifer, mas começo a achar que sim. Para quem nunca leu nenhum dos dois, o final não é algo muito conclusivo no sentido de resolveram-se todos os problemas, ou foram felizes para sempre. Achei os finais dela bem realistas pra falar a verdade, e gostei do seu comentário a respeito do final nos seus agradecimentos. Favor lê-lo só depois da história toda para não ter nenhum spoiler.

As in The Hate List, Jennifer also handles with a very controversial subject in this book, something that should be more discussed in our society: violence against women.

Alex has a very normal life despite having lost her mother as a child. She lives with her father and one of the two sisters (Celia and Shannin), works in a cafeteria after school, and has two best friends (Bethany and Zach) with whom she is planning a trip after graduating from high school. She wants to go to the state and the last place her mother was before she died in an accident.

Everything is seemingly good in her life and with her, but the ghosts she feeds internally will come to the surface when she meets Cole. Cole is the type of guy who at first sight is the perfect boyfriend, but the more Alex knows him, the more she sees that she’s got into a big problem, a problem that she does not know how to escape.

For me the most shocking thing in the story was seeing all the psychological description of everything Alex is living / feeling in her eyes. It’s something so interesting that sometimes I was able to put myself into her place. She always thought that she deserved less, that she was less, and when she is in a toxic situation to herself she isn’t able to take a stand against it precisely because she really thinks she deserves it. Who has never suffered with a little lack of self-esteem can throws the first stone.

I found the conclusion of this book very similar to the one of The Hate List, and I do not know if this is Jennifer’s style, but I begin to think so. For those who have never read either of the books, the ending is not very conclusive in the sense that all problems were solved, or they lived happily ever after. I found her endings very realistic to tell the truth, and I liked her comment about the ending in her thanks notes. Please read it only after reading the whole story to have no spoiler.
