13 Reasons Why – 13 diferenças entre livro e série

Os 13 Porquês – Jay Asher (13 Reasons Why)

Clay recebe um pacote na porta de casa quem contém várias fitas K7. Quando ele ouve a 1ª descobre que elas se tratam de gravações da já falecida Hannah Baker, a garota pela qual ele é apaixonado e que se matou a 2 semanas atrás. Curioso em descobrir o real motivo para ela ter feito o que fez ele acaba ouvindo todas as fitas, que segundo Hannah prometem explicar os 13 motivos que a levaram a decidir tirar a própria vida. Clay está entre esses motivos.

A história é basicamente esta: Clay ouvindo as fitas. Mas não vou fazer um post apenas falando a respeito do livro. Como já assisti a série, vou listar algumas diferenças (que tal 13 diferenças?) entre ambos e adicionar alguns comentários a respeito destas diferenças.

1) No livro a história é narrada apenas sob o ponto de vista de Clay, ou seja, só ficamos sabendo da opinião dele a respeito das fitas. Já na série apesar do enfoque ser em Clay ouvindo as fitas você fica sabendo a opinião de todos que já ouviram as fitas além dele e como estes estão lidando com a situação.

2) No livro Jay Asher não dá muitas características físicas a respeito dos personagens. A gente apenas tem informações meio gerais, como o jogador da escola, a mais bonita e popular, o fulano do jornal, enfim, não há descrição da aparência de nenhum deles. O que para a série foi superinteressante pois eles puderam diversificar na escolha dos personagens. Achei muito interessante terem escolhido uma Jessica(a mais bonita descrita por Hannah) que na verdade não era mais bonita do que Hannah. Jessica então era a mais apenas na cabeça dela.

3) No livro Clay não é o penúltimo a ouvir as fitas. Na série ele foi colocado como penúltimo para termos o choque ele entregando as fitas ao último listado nos 13 motivos. Achei uma boa adaptação.

4) No livro Clay ouve todas as fitas apenas em uma noite, mas na série ele demora alguns dias para ouvir todas- fica meio explicado o motivo ao longo da série e há brincadeiras constantes a respeito da enrolação dele para ouvir tudo de uma vez. Conforme ele vai ouvindo ele confronta os personagens envolvidos nos motivos. Há também muita tensão da parte das outras pessoas envolvidas pois eles temem que Clay entregue as fitas a polícia ou as torne públicas. Nada disso acontece no livro porém.

5) Hannah se mata com comprimidos no livro, mas na série a sua morte é muito mais chocante pois ela o faz cortando os pulsos.

6) No livro Clay não era amigo do menino que morreu no acidente por conta da placa de pare derrubada, mas na série ele não só é amigo dele como este menino foi um incentivador no sentido de Clay investir em Hannah.

7) No livro Tony é um dos únicos personagens que interage com Clay mas em momento algum conseguimos concluir que o personagem dele é gay. Na série isso fica evidente em várias interações dele com o próprio Clay.

8) Os pais de Hannah assim como os de Clay só aparecem na série, o que deixou a história mais interessante pois podemos ver como os adultos lidam com a situação que está acontecendo mesmo sem saber das fitas. Destaque máximo aqui para a atriz que faz a mãe de Hannah. Ela tá fantástica no papel.

9) No livro Alex não tenta se matar e nem é tão mencionado. Na verdade, o personagem dele é mais apagado já que Clay não o conhece bem e então ficamos apenas com os fatos dele narrados por Hannah nas fitas. Na série o personagem do Alex é bem mais complexo e explorado. Ele se sente muito culpado por tudo que aconteceu e no final da série sabemos que ele tentou te matar com um tiro na cabeça.

10) A série também foca bastante no personagem do Tyler. O final mostrando ele guardando várias armas no próprio quarto é totalmente fora do que temos no livro, que assim como Alex é quase nada. Sabemos que ele tirou fotos de Hannah no quarto, mas nada além disso é comentado pois assim como Alex Clay também não devia conhecer muito ele.

11) O episódio das fotos nos leva a mais uma diferença entre a série e o livro, que é o fato de que no livro nada acontece no quarto de Hannah. Nem ela nem Courtney estão bêbadas e as duas estão o tempo todo fingindo brincadeiras para provocar o stalker. Já na série, Courtney investe em Hannah, já que ela guarda o segredo de ser gay e não querer admitir. Achei bem interessante essa adaptação pois abriu margem para algumas discussões eu o livro não abre.

12) Na história do livro Hannah não foi estuprada. Ela afirma categoricamente que consentiu com tudo que aconteceu. Mas a série meio que coloca esse consentimento em jogo sugerindo que o que aconteceu com ela foi sim um tipo de estupro.

13) E enfim, no livro como Clay não é o penúltimo a ouvir a fita, não sabemos se alguém entrega as fitas ao Mr Porter, coisa que na série a gente não só vê como Clay interage com Mr Porter o questionando por não ter ajudado Hannah. Achei que essa mudança na série ficou bem interessante, principalmente porque podemos ver o Mr Potter ao longo da história, todo seu sentimento de culpa e como ele lida com isso.

 

Clay gets a package from his front door which contains several tapes. When he listens to the 1st, he discovers that they are recordings of Hannah Baker, the girl he is passionate about and who killed herself 2 weeks ago. Curious in discovering the real reason for her to do what she did, he ends up listening to all the tapes, in which Hannah promises to explain the 13 reasons that led her to decide to take her own life. Clay is among those reasons.

The story is basically this: Clay listening to the tapes. But I will not make a post just by talking about the book. As I already watched the series, I will list some differences (how about 13 differences?) Between both and add some comments regarding these differences.

1) In the book the story is told only from Clay’s point of view, so we only know his opinion about the tapes. In the series despite the focus being on Clay listening to the tapes you get the opinion of everyone who has heard the tapes besides him and how they are dealing with the situation.

2) In the book Jay Asher does not give many physical characteristics about the characters. We just have some general information, like the popular school player, the most beautiful and popular girl, the guy from the school newspaper, in short, there is no description of the appearance of any of them. Which for the series was super interesting because they could diversify in the choice of the characters. I thought very interesting the choice for Jessica (the prettiest one described by Hannah) who was, actually, no prettier than Hannah. Jessica was only the most something in Hannah’s head.

3) In the book Clay is not the penultimate to hear the tapes. In the series he was placed like penultimate to have the shock of him delivering the tapes to the last listed in the 13 reasons. I thought it was a good change.

4) In the book Clay listen to all the tapes in one night, but in the series it takes a few days for him to listen to them all- the reason is explained throughout the series and there are constant jokes about his coaxing to listen to everything at once. While he listens to he confronts the characters involved in the reasons. There is also a lot of tension from the other people involved as they fear that Clay will hand over the tapes to the police or make them public. None of this happens in the book though.

5) Hannah kills herself taking a lot of pills in the book, but in the series her death is much more shocking because she does it by cutting her wrists.

6) In the book Clay was not friend of the boy who died in the car accident due to the lack of the STOP sign but in the series he not only is his friend as this boy was always incenting to make Clay to invest in Hannah.

7) In the book Tony is one of the only characters that interacts with Clay but at no time we can conclude that his character is gay. In the series this is evident in several interactions of him with Clay.

8) Hannah’s parents as well as Clay’s parents only appear in the series, which made the story more interesting as we can see how adults deal with the situation that is happening even without knowing the tapes. Highlight here for the actress who plays Hannah’s mother. She looks fantastic on paper.

The next reasons may contain large SPOILERS if you have not read or seen the story.

9) In the book Alex does not try to kill himself or at least this is not mentioned. In fact, his character doesn’t appear a lot since Clay does not know him well and then we just have the facts of him narrated by Hannah on the tapes. In the series Alex is much more complex and explored. He feels very guilty about everything that happened and by the end of the series we know he tried to kill himself with a shot in the head.

10) The series also focuses a lot on Tyler’s character. The end shows him guarding several guns in his room and this is totally out of the way we have in the book, which as well as Alex is next to nothing. We know he took pictures of Hannah in her bedroom, but nothing more is said since as well as Alex Clay doesn’t know much about him.

11) The episode of the photos leads us to another difference between the series and the book, which is the fact that nothing happens in Hannah’s bedroom. Neither she nor Courtney are drunk and the two are all the time pretending to tease the stalker. In the series, Courtney invests in Hannah, since she keeps the secret of being gay and not wanting to admit it. I found this adaptation very interesting because it made room for some discussions that the book does not open.

12) In the book’s history Hannah was not raped. She states categorically that she consented to everything that happened. But the series sort of puts that consent into jeopardy suggesting that what happened to her was somehow also a rape.

13) And finally, in the book, since Clay is not the penultimate to hear the tape, we do not know if someone delivers the tapes to Mr Porter, which in the series we see how Clay interacts with Mr Porter questioning him for not helping Hannah. I found this change in the series to be very interesting, mainly because we can see Mr Potter throughout the story, all his sense of guilt and how he deals with it.
