Histórias de AU PAIR: 2a família, perrengues, histórias inusitadas

Meu ano de au pair realmente começou quando cheguei na segunda família um mês depois de já estar nos EUA. Eles moravam em Rockville, cidade vizinha a Washington DC. Nossa casa era localizada no final da linha vermelha do metrô de DC, Shady Grove.

Nessa família eu tomava conta de dois meninos também, Andrew de 5 anos, e Brendan de 3. Eu tinha meu próprio quarto e banheiro mas não tinha carro. Fazia tudo que precisava a pé ou usava ônibus(quase nunca porque não haviam muitos horários) e metrô. O esquema funcionava bem, exceto nos dias de neve e friaca, nos quais eu andava quase congelando e me sentindo dentro de uma geladeira. Certo dia quando eu tentava ir ao banco, que era 30 min a pé de onde eu morava, desisti no meio do caminho pois o frio era tão grande que se eu continuasse iria congelar antes de chegar no destino. Nunca imaginei sentir esse frio na vida. Foi horrível, mas valeu muito a experiência.

Mesmo a 2a família sendo super “aproveitadora” no sentido de me fazer trabalhar 45h, e às vezes até mais quando davam uns gatos, eu acho que o meu ano foi super bem aproveitado no sentido de que eu realmente consegui viver o dia a dia americano.

Eu estranhei muito comidas e alguns hábitos no início mas depois acabei até incorporando comidas na minha rotina pós intercâmbio que passei a gostar. Também melhorei muito a minha pronúncia de várias palavras graças ao meu host mala que ficava me corrigindo e enchendo meu saco mas que no final acabou mesmo foi me ajudando com isso.

Consegui viver um dia típico de Halloween americano (vou fazer um vídeo só disso) e frequentei a Montgomery College, que ficava a 30 min a pé da minha casa, onde fiz 2 cursos das matérias comuns das graduações da faculdade já que passei em todos os níveis do teste de ESL (English as a Second Language), que é o curso que a maioria dos aupairs e outros intercambistas fazem quando vão fazer intercâmbio.

Sobre os grandes perrengues que passei posso destacar com certeza as 2 vezes que fiquei presa no metrô de DC porque não tinha troco em moedas para pagar o restante da passagem. Tive que fica pedindo dinheiro para as pessoas que chegavam com os metrôs pra conseguir sair em ambas as vezes (mendigona mode on). E sim eu tinha dinheiro, mas lá você precisa de notas, moedas trocadas pois as vendas são feitas em máquinas.

Outra vez fiquei presa no supermercado do meu bairro sem eletricidade  no meio da passagem de um furacão(que estavam passando pela Virgínia mas que como estávamos próximos também fomos um pouco afetados). Entrei no supermercado céu aberto e limpo, qdo fui passar no caixa o armagedon acontecia lá fora e a eletricidade acabou e tudo mais. Meu host foi me resgatar, e desse dia em diante entendi porque todo mundo é vidrado em previsão do tempo por lá.

Fiz amigos brasileiros que moravam no meu bairro, e sai muito com eles durante os meses que fiquei lá. Passamos Natal e Ano Novo juntos, fui para NYC 2 vezes e uma para a praia na Carolina do Sul junto com os meus hosts. Trabalhei muito, estudei muito, aprendi muito. Tudo valeu a pena: perrengues, alegrias, experiências que ficaram e agregaram.

My au pair year really started when I arrived in the second family one month after I was already in the USA. They lived in Rockville, a town really close to Washington DC. Our house was located at the end of the red line of DC subway, Shady Grove.

In this family I took care of two boys too, Andrew age 5, and Brendan age 3. I had my own bedroom and bathroom but no car. I did everything Ineeded on foot or picked up buses (almost never because there were not many) and subway. It all worked well, except on the snowy and coldy days, in which I was almost freezing and feeling myself inside a refrigerator. One day when I tried to go to the bank, which was 30 min walk from where I lived, I gave up halfway because the cold was so huge that if I continued I would freeze before arriving at the destination. I never imagined feeling this cold in my life. It was awful, but well worth the experience.

Even the 2nd family being super insensitive and making me work 45 hours per week, and sometimes even more, I think my year there was really good since I really got to live the American day to day .

I have a hard time getting used to the food and some habits at first, but then I even added some of these food I ended up enjoying to my post-exchange routine. I also improved my pronunciation of several words thanks to my host without notion dad who kept correcting and laughing at me, but that in the end was really helping.

I was able to live a typical American Halloween (I’m going to make a video about it) and I studied at Montgomery College, which was a 30-minute walk from my house. I took 2 college graduation courses since I was approved in all levels of the ESL (English as a Second Language) test, which is the course that most aupairs and other exchange students do.

Regarding the great troubles I experienced, I can certainly point out the 2 times I got stuck in the DC subway because I had no change in coins to pay for the rest of the ticket. I had to ask for money from the people who arrived with the subways to get out both times (beggar mode on). And yes I had money, but only big value ones, and I needed coins because you buy the tickets on machines.

Another episose was when I was stuck in the neighborhood supermarket without electricity in the middle of a hurricane (it was passing through Virginia but as we were close we were also a little affected). I went into the supermarket, the sky opened and clean, and when I went to the cashier the Armageddon was happening outside and the electricity was over and everything was really scary. My host came to rescue me, and from that day on I understood why everyone have their TVs turned on the weather forecast.

I made some Brazilian friends who lived in my neighborhood, and went out with them a lot during the months that I stayed there. We spent Christmas and New Year together. I went to NYC 2 times, and one time to the beach in South Carolina with my hosts. I worked a lot, studied a lot, learned a lot. Everything was worth it: troubles, cheers, experiences that will remain forever in my mind.
