Histórias de AU PAIR: College

E foi na Montgomery College que eu peguei 2 cursos para preencher os créditos exigidos pelo programa de aupair. Na verdade apenas um deles já preencheria o necessário mas eu quis pegar outro por motivos de querer material para meu possível mestrado quando voltasse pro Brasil.

Fiz o teste de nível de inglês como segunda língua e como passei em todos os níveis podia escolher matérias da gradução. Optei por duas das matérias gerais que eram comuns a qualquer das graduações e eram relacionadas com o que eu mais gostava e/ou queria pesquisar, que foram English 101 e English 105. Em English 101 as aulas eram sobre leitura e escrita do inglês e era presencial, e em English 105 as aulas eram sobre gramática normativa do inglês, e a aula era a distância (eu só ia no campus fazer prova dessa).

As duas matérias foram sensacionais. Bem, pelo menos pra uma amante das Letras como eu foram. Aprendi muita coisa, pratiquei muito redação e enfim, descobri o mundo da gramática normativa do inglês, outro nível de sabedoria aí que nunca havia pensado em adquirir antes disso. Me bateu uma insegurança basicona de que não conseguiria acompanhar as aulas, já que todos era nativos ou moravam a muito tempo nos EUA, mas no fim eu me esforcei tanto que consegui ficar entre as melhores notas.

Os professores eram sensacionais, e os colegas de aula também, conversei com muita gente diferente, porém não mantive amizade com ninguém de lá. As pessoas são muito mais fechadas que aqui, e enfim, eu também não sou das mais abertas. Geralmente só falava o que era obrigada.

No fim os amigos que tenho desta época acabaram sendo todos brasileiros, principalmente as meninas que eram minhas vizinhas, Dani e Uilma. Até hoje nos falamos. As duas ainda moram nos EUA.

And it was at Montgomery College that I took 2 courses to fill out the credits required by the aupair program. In fact only one of them would fill what was necessary but I wanted to take another one in order to get some material for my possible master’s degree when I returned to Brazil.

I took the level ESL(English as a second language) test and since I passed all levels I could choose subjects from the graduation catalog. I chose two of the general subjects that were common to any of the graduations and  that were related to what I liked and / or wanted to research, which were English 101 and English 105. In English 101 the classes were about reading and writing English, and  in English 105 the classes were about English normative grammar, and the classes were online (I only would go to campus to make the tests to this one).

 

 

Both were awesome. Well, at least for a languages lover like me . I learned a lot, practiced a lot of writing and, finally, I discovered the world of English normative grammar, another level of wisdom that I had never thought to acquire before that. I was hit by a basic insecurity that I would not be able to keep up with the classes, since the students were all natives or lived in the US for a long time, but in the end I worked so hard that I passed with good grades.

The teachers were sensational, and the classmates too, I talked to a lot of different people, but I did not keep any friendships from there. People are really distant, it’s not easy to get close to someone like we do in Brazil, and anyway, I’m not one of the open ones either. I usually just said what I had to say.

In the end the friends I have from this time ended up being all Brazilians, especially the girls who were my neighbors, Dani and Uilma. We are friends until now, but the two still live in the USA.
