Corpos Ocultos – Caroline Kepnes (Hidden Bodies)

Que livro fantástico! A Caroline manteve a mesma qualidade do primeiro e me fez ficar colada na história até terminar. Joe definitivamente é aquele anti-herói que a gente não consegue abandonar.

E o mais legal desse segundo volume é que ele realmente está “tentando ser uma pessoa melhor”. Nos termos dele, claro. Mas…será que podemos mesmo vislumbrar uma melhora quando se fala de personalidade?

O fato é que por mais que você saiba que ele não bate bem, que ele precisa ter algum tipo de punição, você não consegue deixar de no fundo no fundo desejar que de alguma forma ele se safe. Você se conecta com ele. E eu  chamo isso de dom da escrita, porque são raros os livros que eu não concordo de maneira alguma com a atitude e pensamentos dos personagens e mesmo assim não consigo parar de ler de tão conectada com a história que fico.

Caroline é desse tipo. Colleen Hoover é MUITO desse tipo. Elle Kennedy também é desse tipo.

Mas falando da história, e aqui frizzo que falarei, assim como no vídeo, da história do livro e não da série – já que a série acabou se distanciando bem dos acontecimentos desse segundo livro – Joe vai para a Califórnia atrás de revanche contra Amy, uma outra moça que ele namora depois de Becky e que dá um golpe nele e na livraria sumindo com todos os livros raros que eles tinham.

Chegando em Los Angeles onde ele sabe que Amy está pelas pistas que conseguiu, ele começa a tentar rastreá-la indo a lugares que ela frequentaria. E é em um desses lugares que ele irá conhecer Love, sua próxima amada.

A Love do livro é mais velha que Joe e tem um irmão gêmeo chamado Forty, que no livro é totalmente desagradável, lixo humano mesmo. Ela teve um marido que morreu, e não havia ficado com mais ninguém até conhecer Joe. E ela realmente se apaixona por ele, o que faz a dinâmica da história ficar bem diferente da relação com Becky, que não parecia amar genuinamente ele.

Joe e ela então irão namorar quase que instantaneamente após se conhecerem. Joe irá conhecer um “irmão de criação” dos gêmeos chamado Milo, o qual é apaixonado por Love, e irá sim querer matá-lo (até eu quis em determinado ponto desta história hehehe) mas acabará desistindo da ideia justamente por Love provar pra ele que é ele que ela ama e ela não está nem nunca esteve nem aí pra Milo. Joe acaba até ficando com “pena” do cara por ficar correndo atrás de alguém que nunca o amará. Ironias do destino né!?

Por conta de pistas falsas que consegue a respeito de Amy, Joe acaba matando 2 pessoas “meio que sem querer”. Essas pessoas serão as mesmas que morrem na história da série porém no livro elas acontecem por motivos diferentes e de maneiras diferentes.

Se quiserem mais detalhes, eu falei praticamente da história do livro todo no vídeo, e aqui não entregarei mais nada para não ficar um post cheio de spoilers.

De qualquer forma, eu estou ansiosa para saber como os livros continuarão, pois a autora disse que escreveria mais sobre Joe ainda.

What a fantastic book! Caroline kept the same quality of the first one and made me stick to the story until it was over. Joe is definitely that antihero we can’t abandon.

And the cool thing about this second volume is that he’s really “trying to be a better person.” Under his terms, of course. But … can we really see any improvement when it comes to personality?

The fact is, as much as you know that he is nuts , that he needs to have some kind of punishment, you can’t stop deep inside wanting him to somehow get away with all of it. You connect with him. And I call it the gift of writing, because these kind of books are rare, the ones that I don’t agree at all on the attitude and thoughts of the characters and yet I can’t stop reading so connected to the story I get.

Caroline is that kind of writer. Colleen Hoover is REALLY that kind. Elle Kennedy is like that too.

But speaking of the story, and here I will tell you, as well as in the video, the story of the book and not the series – since the series is pretty different from the second book – Joe goes to California looking for a revenge against Amy, another girl he dates after Becky who bretayed him and robbed the bookstore by disappearing with all the rare books they had.

Arriving in Los Angeles where he knows Amy is due to the clues he had, he starts trying to track her down to places she would go to. And it is in one of these places that he will meet Love, his next beloved.

The Love of the book is older than Joe and has a twin brother named Forty, who in the book is totally nasty, really human junk. She had a husband who died, and had not been with anyone until she met Joe. And she really falls in love with him, which makes the story’s dynamics very different from the relationship with Becky, who didn’t seem to genuinely love him.

Joe and she will then date almost instantly after meeting each other. Joe will meet a “step brother” of the twins named Milo, who is in love with Love, and he will want to kill him (even I wanted at some point in this story hehehe) but will eventually give up on the idea precisely because Love proves to him she really loves him and she doesn’t even care about Milo. Joe ends up pitying the guy for running after someone who will never love him. Ironies of fate, right?

Because of false clues about Amy, Joe ends up killing 2 people “kind of unintentionally”. These people will be the same ones who die in the story of the series but in the book the deaths happen for different reasons and in different ways.

If you want more details, I practically told the story of the whole book in the video, and here I will not give anything else so as not to be a post full of spoilers.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to how the books will continue, since the author said she would write more about Joe yet.
