Meu Romeu/Minha Julieta - Leisa Rayven (Bad Romeo/Broken Juliet)

PS. Ainda lerei o Coração Perverso, spin-off destes livros, e volto aqui para postar a respeito dele.

For me, these two books (which could easily have been just one) are the After that worked, and I’ll explain why.

We met the protagonist couple in the story, Ethan Holt and Cassie Taylor on a test where they are both trying to get into America’s most famous performing arts college. The chemistry of the two already in the tests is undeniable and will increase exponentially when both pass and start studying together.

We will follow this story from Cassie’s point of view, except that this point of view is mixed between Cassie from the past (beginning of college) and Cassie from the future, who is 3 years after finishing college, already with a consolidated career and having to deal with the fact she will need to make a play with her hated ex-boyfriend Ethan Holt again. This Cassie of the future hates him and we are instantly hooked to understand the reasons why she has such strong feelings about him.

We will then follow between these alternating chapters how the two started to relate in college, which was due to the very first organized play where the two played Romeo and Juliet (the names of the books comes from there). After it they will start ddating, but the dating will be extremely strange because as we will understand Ethan was full of complexes about loving again. He had been betrayed by his girlfriend and ex-best friend, and therefore he did not feel secure in loving again. Because of these reasons, among others that we will understand throughout the book, Ethan ends up deciding to leave Cassie for the first time when he realizes that he is falling in love with her.

However, neither he nor she can stay away from each other no matter how hard they try since they were already in love. Although Cassie is heartbroken, she justifies the fact that she is close to Ethan with the illusions of “being some way in charge”, but everyone knows that neither of them can control anything.

They will then spend much of their college in this foggy period of friends with benefits to justify their closeness. And because of that I say that the story came to look a lot like After since the relationship is beyond troubled.

But unlike After, there is no abusive relationship in this book. Although Ethan is the most twisted guy on earth, he never tries to keep Cassie away from her friends, nor to control her or anything like that. He obviously does not hide his jealousy and makes a fool of himself, but as the story unfolds you can only think that he is just a normal human being. Just like Cassie. You fully understand her attitudes even though you often don’t agree. The empathy for both characters is real and grows even more when we get to the 2nd book of Broken Juliet.

Until I read it, I still had my reservations about Ethan’s big change of attitude, but in this second volume you will understand how the process happened, and yes he had great help from a psychologist who attended for years. Cassie inspired by him will then seek psychological help as well, and people, for me this is the biggest difference between the stories (Comparing with After) because they both understand that they need to resolve themselves to be able to be together without the relationship draining them.

And just for that reason I would already recommend the books, but it also has the whole fact of the addictive reading that you can’t stop, Leisa’s great and clear writing and also the fact that you feel like you are living with artists, which I at least I was always curious to know what it was like (even in fiction).

Read it if you can, and if you enjoyed Mr. Romance and Professor Feelgood also from Leisa.

PS. I will still read the Wicked Heart, spin-off of these books, and I will come back here to post about it.
