Ninguém pode saber – Karin Slaughter (Pieces of Her)

Este livro foi a minha primeira leitura da Karin e eu confesso que não me fisgou de primeira.

O livro é narrado em 3a pessoa, porém já no início seguiremos os pensamentos principalmente de Andie, uma moça que tá ali no começo dos seus 30 anos vivendo em sua cidadezinha natal já que a alguns anos voltou para lá cuidar da mãe Laura que estava com câncer. O tempo passou, a mãe melhorou mas ela não foi embora porque a vida fora da cidade não estava lá tão interessante.

Porém Andie vai ser obrigada a abandonar o lugar quando após um serial killer tentar matar ela e a mãe num café, Andie é salva pela mãe. Laura acaba por matar o assassino tentando defender Andie e as duas vão parar nos principais noticiários do país.

Após o ocorrido e mais um outro fator bem louco que acontece na história Laura implora para a filha fugir da cidade sem falar com ninguém pois pessoas estão procurando ela (aparentemente para feri-la) e ir até um determinado ponto que seria um local seguro até ela poder entrar em contato com Andie quando a poeira abaixasse e fosse seguro voltar.

O livro então começará a mesclar capítulos de Andie nesta fuga tentando entender o motivo de ter que fugir em primeiro lugar, com capítulos do que a gente desconfia ser o passado da mãe dela que irá nos fazer entender porque aquela situação estava acontecendo.

A premissa da história é super interessante, porém achei a primeira metade do livro parada apesar de toda essa louca do começo. Acredito que foram muitos capítulos sem nenhum resposta ou pista concreta, o que pra mim deixou a leitura com uma sensação maçante.

Do meio para o final isto muda e as coisas começam a acontecer assim como respostas começam a se desenhar, mas o motivo que me fez desgostar em grande parte da história foi o fato de termos uma mudança de perspectiva no final da história. Antes tínhamos o foco nos pensamentos de Andie e no final do livro essa perspectiva muda para Laura e ao mesmo tempo que entendo os motivos de Karin para ter feito essa escolha achei que não ficou tão legal pois eu já havia me apegado a Andie.

Dito isso, de forma geral achei a história bem interessante e portanto pretendo ler mais alguma coisa da Karin para tirar a prova se não gostei apenas desta ou se não curto o estilo da autora mesmo. Veremos! Volto aqui contar quando o fizer.

This book was my first Karin reading and I confess that it didn’t pick me at first reading.

The book is narrated in 3rd person, but at the beginning we will follow mostly Andie’s thoughts , a girl who is in her early 30s living in her hometown since a few years ago she went back to take care of her mother Laura had cancer. Time passed, her mother got better but she did not leave because life outside the town was not so interesting.

However Andie will be forced to leave the place after a serial killer tries to kill her and her mother in a cafe. Andie is saved by her mother. Laura ends up killing the killer trying to defend Andie and the two end up on the main news from the country.

After what happened and another very crazy factor that happens in the story Laura begs her daughter to run away from the city without talking to anyone because people are looking for her (apparently to hurt her) and go to a certain point that would be a safe place until she could contact Andie when it would be safe to return.

The book will then begin to merge chapters of Andie in this escape trying to understand the reason for having to run away in the first place, with chapters of what we suspect is her mother’s past that will make us understand why that situation was happening.

The story plot is super interesting, but I thought the first half of the book really slow despite all the crazy stuff at the beginning. I believe that there were many chapters with no answer or concrete clue, which left me with a dull feeling for reading.

From the middle to the end it changes and things start to happen as responses start to draw, but the reason that made me dislike most the story was the fact that we had a change of perspective at the end of the story. In the beginning we focus on Andie’s thoughts and at the end of the book that perspective changes for Laura and at the same time that I understand Karin’s reasons for making this choice I thought it was not so cool because I had already become attached to Andie’s POV.

That said, in general I thought the story very interesting and therefore I intend to read more from Karin to take the test if I didn’t like this one or if I don’t like the author’s style. We’ll see! I’ll come back to tell you when I do.
