Se você está procurando um livro de memórias de uma vida, aliás de várias vidas, e com um texto completamente contemplativo, O amor nos tempos do cólera é um forte candidato.

Ao longo do livro nós iremos acompanhar a vida toda de 3 personagens principais, que são Juvenal Urbino, Fermina Daza e Florentino Ariza.

Logo de cara, ali no comecinho vemos a morte de um amigo próximo do médico Juvenal Urbino e logo em seguida a sua própria morte por um acidente meio besta. Firmina, sua esposa, o vela em casa, e ao final do velório Florentino aparece para reiterar seu amor por ela, mesmo após ela ter ficado casada mais de 50 anos com Urbino.

Daí você pensa, oi? Como assim!? E é aí que a história volta no tempo pra uma Firmina novinha adolescente e um Florentino também adolescente se apaixonando por ela naquela época.

Até aí vc pensa, opa, mas como assim ela era apaixonada por Firmino? Como ela desgostou dele e casou com o Juvenal? sim, porque ela aparenta estar sofrendo muito pela perda dele, era amor sim…será!?

O livro vai nos trazer todas estas repostas, e eu diria que este é o charme dele, enquanto ele conta a vida toda desses três personagens ele vai nos mostrando todas as formas que o amor pode se apresentar pra gente.

O título faz alusão ao tempo em que a história se passa ali no Caribe, onde surtos de cólera, a doença, sempre aconteciam, e também ao sintomas do amor serem muito confundidos com os sintomas desta doença. Sem contar também o significado de raiva que a palavra cólera contém que é usado ao longo da história para justificar alguns atos que no fim são confundidos com algum tipo de amor. Achei a escolha muito pertinente com tudo que encontramos ao longo da história, realmente um ótimo título.

Se você curte ler livros que retrarem relacionamentos da vida real este é um bom livro, a linguagem por ser um desafio no início, mas conforme você vai avançando na história ela vira apenas um detalhe já que você acaba se acostumando com a dinâmica do texto. Vale o desafio. Vale muito. Aliás, se você quer se aventurar por clássicos da literatura esse é um bom título para um desafio pois a história é legal e te convida a vencer a barreira do texto, que por si só é mais complexo.

Love in the Time of Cholera

What a fantastic book!

If you are looking for a memoir of a lifetime, of several lifetimes indeed, and with a completely contemplative text, Love in the time of cholera is a strong candidate.

Throughout the book we will follow the whole life of 3 main characters, who are Juvenal Urbino, Fermina Daza and Florentino Ariza.

Right away, at the very beginning we see the death of a doctor Juvenal Urbino’s friend and soon afterwards his own death by a somewhat unexpected accident. Firmina, his wife, make his fineral at home, and at the end of it Florentino appears to reiterate his love for her, even after she was married more than 50 years to Urbino.

So you think, what? How!? And that’s when the story goes back in time for a brand new teenage Firmina and a teenage Florentino falling in love with her back then.

So far you think, oops, but how come she was in love with Firmino? How did she dislike him and marry Juvenal? yes, because she seems to be suffering a lot for his loss, it was love right? … will it be !?

The book will bring us all these answers, and I would say that this is its charm, while it tells the whole life of these three characters it will show us all the ways that love can present itself.

The title alludes to the time that the story takes place in the Caribbean, where outbreaks of cholera, the disease, always happened, and also to the symptoms of love being very confused with the symptoms of this disease. Not to mention also the meaning of anger that the word cholera contains that is used throughout the story to justify some acts that in the end are mistaken for some kind of love. I thought the choice very pertinent with everything we found throughout the story, a really great title.

If you enjoy reading books that reflect real life relationships, this is a good book, the language might be a challenge at the beginning, but as you progress it becomes just a detail as you end up getting used to the dynamics of the text. Worth the challenge. Worth a lot. In fact, if you want to venture into the classics of literature, this is a good title for a challenge because the story is cool and invites you to overcome the text barrier, which in itself is more complex.
