O Grande Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald

E queria ler esse livro fazia tempo e que bom que finalmente o li pois ele é simplesmente fantástico.

Primeiro que essa edição ilustrada e tradução da Antofágica ajudaram muito, segundo que a história é muito envolvente. E terceiro que eu adoro o tipo de narrativa que encontramos nele. Nós temos Nick como narrador tentando relatar após alguns anos o que havia acontecido quando conheceu Gatsby.

Nick nos conta sobre sua prima Daisy e seu marido Tom, que moram no mesmo bairro em que ele e Gatsby moram, e que pelo que entendemos possuem um casamento mais de aparências do que outra coisa já que Tom sempre tem amantes e Daisy demonstra saber de tudo. Há também uma hóspede, Jordan Baker, passando um tempo com os dois, que chama a atenção de Nick na história, mas a narrativa mesmo vai girar em torno de Gatsby.

Nick irá nos contar que Gatsby davam festas enormes das quais quase toda cidade participava, e que ele começa a frequentar a convite do próprio Gatsby. Ele se espanta com a juventude de Gatsby já que imaginava que ele seria um velho gordo e rico sem muito o que fazer para sempre estar dando festas.

E é conhecendo melhor Gatsby que fica insinuado aos olhos de Nick que ele lidava com alguma atividade ilícita para ter conseguido toda aquela riqueza aos 30, coisa que sem isso só seria possível se ele tivesse vindo de uma família rica como Tom.

Nick irá descobrir então que Gatsby tem uma ligação com Daisy do passado e a história vai girar em torno dessa conexão a partir daí.

Sério, um livro que é simples e ao mesmo tempo genial. Gostei muito e super recomendo a leitura. Confesso que por mais falhas que Nick possua ele foi o personagem que mais simpatizei na narrativa numa primeira leitura.

I wanted to read this book for a while and it’s good that I finally read it because it’s just fantastic.

First that this Antofágica illustrated edition helped a lot, second that the story is very engaging. And third, I love the kind of narrative we find in it. We have Nick as the narrator trying to report after a few years what had happened when he met Gatsby.

Nick tells us about his cousin Daisy and her husband Tom, who live in the same neighborhood where he and Gatsby live, and from what we understand they have a kind of fake wedding since Tom always has lovers and Daisy seems to know them all. There is also a guest, Jordan Baker, spending time with the two of them, who catches Nick’s attention in the story, but the narrative itself will revolve around Gatsby.

Nick will tell us that Gatsby threw huge parties that almost everybody in the city attended, and that he starts attending at the invitation of Gatsby himself. He is amazed by Gatsby’s youth as he imagined that he would be a fat and rich old man without much to do to always be throwing parties.

And it is by getting to know Gatsby better that it is hinted, from Nick’s eyes, that he was dealing with some illicit activity to have achieved all that wealth at 30s, something that would only be possible if he had come from a wealthy family like Tom.

Nick will then discover that Gatsby has a connection with Daisy from the past and the story will revolve around that connection from this moment on.

Seriously, a book that is simple and at the same time brilliant. I really enjoyed it and I highly recommend you to read it. I confess that for more flaws that Nick has he was the character that I sympathized most in the narrative in a first reading.
