A Sombra do Vento – Carlos Ruiz Zafon (La Sombra Del Viento – The Shadow of The Wind)

A Sombra do Vento - Carlos Ruiz Zafon (La Sombra Del Viento - The Shadow of The Wind)

a sombra do vento

Não me senti ansiosa lendo as descrições.

Vale a pena!

Do you know that kind of book that you would never look for or would never buy just by looking on the coverage in the book-store in case you had to choose by just analysing the superficial characteristics?

Yeah, that’s how The Shadow of the Wind was for me. I just started to read it because of the great influence of a good friend from work, who said that he had loved the book and that I needed to read it because he was sure I would love it as much as he did.

How can I resist to requests like this? I can’t resist, and if someone convince me by a+b that I’ll enjoy that certain book, or even if the person talks to me about it with such enthusiasm, I end up jumping on the adventure and throw myself on the reading.

It was like that with the Shadow of The Wind. My friend was so excited about the story that I wanted to read it just to be able to talk to him about it. It was impossible that I wouldn’t like it just observing the tremendous satisfaction level presented by him.

And when I was starting to read it, three more girl friends of mine said they loved the book, so, I had my final confirmation that the level of regret of this reading would be zero, and that I was really uninformed about Zafon, since everyone seemed to know the guy but me hehehe(awkward nerd feelings).

On the first pages of the reading I had couple of certainties. 1) My boyfriend would love this author because of his writing style, 2) I would have to read the book till the end whatever the cost since the story of who is Julian Carax had caught me as much as the main character of the story, Daniel Sempere.
And that’s how I started to fall in love with this story. The narrative was extremely rich in details, but at the same time really active. The reading of the descriptions didn’t let me anxious. On the contrary, it’s good to read the descriptions of the book, Zafon has a great talent on describing details.

What I missed most during the reading was to be able to take notes/make highlights on the book (remembering this one was bored),because there are so many memorable/good/cool and worth to remember quotes that I had to start to take notes of them on my personal notebook.

(my translations-sorry about any mistake!)
“The secret worth as much as the people you need to keep them away”

“The day was splendid with a blue caramel sky and the cool and fresh breeze that smelled like autumn and sea. My favourite Barcelona had always been the October one, when our soul goes to walk and we feel wiser only by drinking the Canaletas fountain water, which by miracle, in these days even tastes chlorine”

“The hard part isn’t simply making money (…) the hard part is making it by doing something that is worth dedicating your life.”

“The more empty is it, the quicker the time goes”

These quotes above are only samples of the ones I took notes, and I’m not lying, the story talks to you. You will for sure recognize yourself on some passage the same way I did with these ones I showed.
And I don’t know, but I’m always hooked by stories that have some kind of mystery, and this story has a mystery beyond intriguing.

A thing that made me kind of lost some times was the names of the characters, they are many, and I even did a little list of them so I wouldn’t lose anything on the story because of it. Anyway, I loved the way the author quotes the complete names of the characters on many scenes, and I don’t know why I liked it exactly, but I guess it gave an interesting air to the story.

It takes a while to read the middle of the book, but when you arrive at some point after it you cannot stop reading. That moment to me was when I was going back home by bus from work. I read the final of a page that made me jump of my seat. And then I had to go the whole way reading, arrive at home and read, I went to sleep late cause I was reading, and I spent the next lunch time reading because I NEEDED to end the damn story.

So, either Michele is a crazy bitch, or this story is really good. Because nobody is so paranoid to finish some reading if this reading is not really good.

The story is passed before 2nd World War in Spain, and it’s narrated by a boy named Daniel Sempere. His dad takes him to a Book Cemetery , where he decided to take a book named The Shadow of the Wind home to read. What he doesn’t know and he will discover is that this books is rare and that there are several people behind it, including a person he discovers to buy all the Julian Carax books to burn them. Now, who is Julian Carax? And why is this person so determined to burn everything he already have published?

Don’t bother trying to imagine why. You’ll never discover it before the end of the book. Zafon is really good at what he does. Read everything and then you might became amused about the explanation. It’s so worth!

My favourite character of the story is Fermin Romero de Torres, which at first is a homeless guy Daniel meets in a street in one of the worst days of his life, but that aftet that will became someone really important at the story. He kind of become Daniel’s buddy on the investigation and people, I loved the romantic advises he gives to Daniel…it’s so funny to ready their conversations.
The big story secret is really hard to be discovered before the author reveals it. I was thinking about it and I did not over-think about Daniel’s mother visits to Mr Aldaya because of the secret, but I came to the conclusion that Zafon built really well all her “wore” fame mainly for us never to think about anything before the big revelation. Really good play.
And the Harry Potter style end was surprising. I was pretty prepared for his death, but I loved that I was mistaken about it when I read it.

Nunca tinha ouvido falar do Záfon, me apaixonei!

    Beijos!
